Acupuncture

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Trey Williams Weve all heard about it. The legendary 6000 year old medical treatment that involves driving small stainless steel spikes into the skin. But what is acupuncture really? How does it work? Does it hurt? Acupuncture is a process of healing that works based upon a system of 12 meridians in the body, the same meridians that Tai Chi practitioners use to channel the flow of their chi. These meridians flow from each of the vital organs the lung, large intestine, stomach, spleen-pancreas, heart, small intestine, bladder, kidney, heart constrictor, triple heater, gallbladder, and liver. Chi Kung practitioners often visualize these channels in the arms and legs, as well as the torso (Governing and Conception meridians) to open up their chi paths and promote health in the corresponding internal organs. When you insert a needle into these same paths, you can change the flow of chi. The body automatically fights any invasion, so when the needle is inserted, the flow of chi to that point increases. If you increase the flow of chi in a meridian, you can strengthen that meridian and internal organ. Also, by pulling the chi down a level in the meridian lines, you weaken the meridian above it, which is useful for removing blockages or chi build up. By creating the proper configuration of needles, you can balance the bodys energy. Does it hurt? Acupuncture needles are very tiny; they range from about .12 mm to .3 mm in diameter. How big is that? Well, the hair on your arm is about .1mm in diameter. If you want an approximation of what it feels like to get acupuncture grab a single hair and give it a good yank. Did you actually do it? Acupuncture hurts less than that, most people cannot even feel the needles. This is a basic overview of acupuncture, there is much more to know, but maybe Ive taught you something new. Tips For Getting The Right Mortgage

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Joseph Kenny Applying for your mortgage and being able to get it are two different things. Also knowing when to apply and where can enter into the picture, too. Here are some tips to help you be better prepared to get the mortgage you are looking for. Check Your Credit Report Get a copy of your credit report and look it over for mistakes. Often times, there may be entries made on it that were made erroneously. These potentially bad marks could reduce the likelihood of your getting a mortgage - even if you always pay on time. If you find bad marks, then talk to the people involved and work to get it settled - before you apply. If you find that your rating may not be as good as you had hoped, then you may want to think twice about applying at this time. Stopping to repair your credit and build it up will mean that you will be eligible for better rates, and larger loans, later. Follow The Market Keep an eye on the housing market and know what the mortgage rates are doing. They continually change, but you need to be aware of whether they are generally moving up or down. The timing of your application needs to be when the rates are low. If you are refinancing, then the rates should be at least one percent lower than your own - two is even better. Know The Type of Mortgage You Want The most common types are the fixed rate mortgage and the adjustable rate mortgage. The fixed rate mortgage keeps the interest rate and your payment always the same. On the other hand, an adjustable rate mortgage means that both change. Usually there is a fixed rate time period, but then the adjustable rate will kick in, and it will usually increase your payment. Before you get an adjustable rate, check to find out the history of interest rates over the past couple of years - it may reveal a trend that could change your mind about this type of loan. Understand The Options It is always best to be able to look at the contract and know what it is talking about. Be sure to understand the various options that could be on your contract, and see what may be eliminated. Don’t be in such a hurry, or so excited about getting it, that you fail to read it before you sign it. Look for such things as PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance), early payoff penalties, and more. If you do not understand what it means - don’t sign. Compare Offers Take a little time to look at various offers could save you thousands of dollars. Be sure to look at the various features of the mortgage by separating the loan from the numerous costs that are attached. This will let you see instantly who is adding on a lot more charges than the other company. Also, compare totals to see what it will actually cost you for the loan. Fraud In Education - Keep Your Money Safe From Criminals

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Ross Mcbride FRAUD used by SCHOOLS Students want to attend high quality established schools. Schools will use fraud to attract students to their school or attempt to appear more established to qualify for government programs or association membership. Schools that claim to have specific affiliations, qualifications, assets, programs, staff or history that are untrue are committing fraud. Schools have also used fraudulent statistics to show jobs or salary upon graduation. A favorite trick is to name a language school as a “college”. The word college in Canada is not an official use name and anyone can name any building, house or barn as a college. Students should not choose a school simply because it has college in the name. College in the name does not mean anything in Canada. Another trick is to use the same name or almost identical name of a famous school in the USA, UK, Asia, or Europe. If the famous school has not registered the name in Canada then anyone else can register the name without any affiliation with the original school at all. Students should not pick a school because it has a famous name in their country as it may have no affiliation at all and is designed to trick students. Schools will appoint international agents or representatives to promote and market the school to potential students then not pay for the advertising or not pay the agency fees. Fraud schools will defraud agents by stating students did not register. Some of the schools are owned by agents. When an independent agent presents the school with a potential student that student will be contacted by the head office agency and re-registered in the name of that agent thus defrauding the original hardworking agent. FRAUD used by AGENTS Students looking for foreign schools and teachers looking for overseas employment use agents to simplify travel and registration arrangements that are usually made in a foreign language. Agents have used a number of practices to deceive students, teachers, schools and immigration officials. Agents committing fraud sell fake medical reports, fake police reports, fake bank deposits records, fake identities and travel documents. These illegal practices include access to student visas, illegal access to free medical services and illegal jobs. There was a famous case in Toronto where fraud agents just sat in a coffee shop outside a language school. They approached Asian students and spoke in Korean or Japanese only. They asked students if they had signed up for the ajoining language school. They were also asked if the students had used an agent. If the students had signed directly they were made an offer that if they went back to the school and placed the fraudsters name as agent they would get a 10 or 15% refund from the fraudsters. Agents have promised teachers overseas jobs that do not exist. Agents have promised facilities or accommodation or teaching resources that do not exist. Wages that are not paid, work visas that never appear and host of other problems. One agent operated a fake teachers “blacklist”. He placed a few known criminal schools then a few of the legitimate schools on the list. This agent was charging fees to the honest schools to be removed. There were a couple of agents that were promising backpackers jobs as English conversation teachers. They told the backpackers that no visa or degree was required. They told the English school that they had a teacher with a work visa, degree and plane expenses. The school usually paid the agent upfront for the plane ticket, recruiting fee and expenses. On the second or third day the school would realize the “teacher” was not suitable and try to call the agent. The agent would call his friend in immigration who would arrest the backpacker and fine or close the school for using an illegal worker. This scam would net the agent half a years regular office salary. With 5,000 small language schools - there were plenty of uninformed new victims. That is also why these agents they use a different name or company name every six months. FRAUD used by STUDENTS The most prevalent fraud is to use the student visa as an entry into Canada to work. These fraud students take away jobs from Canadian immigrant newcomers and jobs for Canadian students. If one really looked at the reasons for Canadian student, youth and newcomer unemployment in Canada - significant culprits are the employers who use illegal workers. Students have hired imposters to take tests for them, paid exam proctors to complete exams, bought essays from “experts” to submit as their own and bribed school officials to change their marks in the official records. The victims of this student fraud are all the honest hardworking students that were denied admission into restricted programs because their marks were not as good as the fraud students who were admitted. FRAUD used by TEACHERS The most used frauds are fake degrees, diplomas or fabricated resumes. Because the demand is high for qualified ESL teachers overseas and these schools have few or no resources to check credentials many fakes go undetected. There have been estimates that 30% of the teachers in Korea used fake degrees to get jobs, and over 60 % of the teachers in China have absolutely no qualifications or fake certificates. The most common “Teacher Fraud” is traveling to overseas countries on a visitor visa and then teaching illegally. FRAUD used by Homestay Providers Homestay can be a wonderful experience for international students when the host family is honest, provides all the contracted services and quality time with the students. Fraud by homestay providers occurs when the family cannot speak English or there is no food, heat, water, toilets or electricity in the house. Some fraud homestay providers jam 5 or 6 students into an illegal basement apartment and some homestay families work at their 3 jobs spending no time at home with the students. The dangerous homestay providers are the sex predators looking for new victims. FRAUD used by DEGREE MILLS A degree mill is any organization that issues fake credentials. There are fraud schools that offer degrees for life experience and claim this is the equivalent of an academic degree from an accredited university. Sorry but many believe this is fraud. The usual price for a fake degree or tesl certificate is $100 in Asia. Many of the schools are attempting to eliminate the frauds by asking for university telephone contacts or the university transcript marks sent directly to the school. The more aggressive fraud degree mills are now selling “the package” degree, tesl, transcript and hotline university contact # for the fake university for $600. The frauds are faster than the police. There are many ESL teachers who have taken a 10 or maybe 20 hour program in a hotel room somewhere or completed some internet reading program and suddenly claim to be a certified TESOL, TESL or TEFL teacher. Many of these “certified teachers” have never been in a classroom. Sorry but many believe that this is fraud. ESL in Canada has conducted several tours of ESL schools across Canada and the USA. Our fieldwork to collect information for the webpage directory has uncovered frauds, misrepresentations and some very bad situations. How to Overcome Co-dependency and Live a Fulfilled Life

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Dr. Ulla Sebastian Co-dependency refers to an obsessive need for affection, attention and affirmation. Co-dependent people get easily drawn into the pain and problems of others, feel responsible to help people solve their problems while ignoring their own, look outside themselves for meaning, identity and value, say yes when they mean no and tend to blame others for their own unhappiness, failures and frustrations. Co-dependency is as much a cultural as a personal phenomenon. Through childhood and adolescence, movies and hit parades feed us co-dependent relationship ideals as romantic love, Christian ideals as service and care for others, cultural ideals as being a good mother, a caring wife or just a good person that cares for other people’s needs more than for ones own. If you as a woman wonder about the difference between being ‘good’ or co-dependent check the degree of involvement and the amount of pain you feel. Ask yourself: * Do I always “have to do something” to help my partner? * Do I feel burdened by the problems of my partner? * Would I like to leave him and yet I do not dare to? *Am I holding on to my partner even if he has repeated affairs or abandons me while “working at the office”? Most people fall into a continuum of co-dependency. If you are still wondering, keep checking: * Do I feel responsible to help people solve their problems while ignoring my own? * Do I look outside myself for meaning, identity and value? * Do I say yes when I mean no? * Do I tend to blame others for my unhappiness, failures and frustrations? If you answer ‘yes’ to most of those questions, co-dependency is an issue. Co-dependency happens in relationships Codependent relationships are predominantly the domain of women who are engaging in personal relationships with someone who needs help and support. They offer themselves as ‘helpers’ and ’saviours’ and turn into angry persecutors if their attempt to save the ‘other’ fails, which is usually the case. This dynamic in co-dependent relationships has been described as the drama triangle being played by two people who change the roles of victim, saviour and persecutor. The term co-dependent relationship was traditionally used for an alcoholic and his or her partner but has lately been applied to a broad range of people who need help such as drug users, criminals, sex addicts, mentally ill, physically ill, and even workaholics who need someone to support them while they “do their thing.” Co-dependency is the result of frustrated needs in childhood Basic needs like being nurtured, protected and appreciated were neglected, boundaries invaded through abuse, self-expression discouraged or punished. This neglect of primal needs then become the obsession of the adult who longs for their fulfilment in every close relationship. The deep need to be saved from the inner loneliness and emptiness is projected on to another person, usually an addict in an attempt to save ‘him’. Needless to say, that her attempt to save the ‘helpless him’ or to endlessly support the ‘busy important ones’ is prone to fail which then increases her frustration, anger, disappointment, guilt and low self worth. Do you recognise any of this? Do you feel a deep need to be saved from inner loneliness and emptiness? This deep need can turn into a desperate, needy search for a romance that makes you vulnerable for being used by people. This neediness will draw partners into your life that want to have their needs fulfilled and will have little concern for your feelings or needs. You may also find yourself projecting this need on to another person, usually an addict in an attempt to save ‘him’. Saving ‘him’ will not solve your problem. In the opposite: If you stay long enough in an unfulfilling relationship you become accustomed to unhappy situations, which then again will make you an easy target for being used. How can you break this vicious cycle and overcome co-dependency? First, make your needs and interests your priority. What do you need to do to be good to yourself, to love yourself, to appreciate the good things in you and in your life? Start to take stock in the people you have surrounded yourself with. Are they as concerned with your needs and feelings as you are with theirs? You may need to detach yourself from some of these people, maybe even your partnership at least until you have taken time to start taking care of yourself. Learn to say No when you mean No. Practice setting up boundaries that are firm and flexible. Saying No can be as easy as just not answering the phone. Romance, alcohol, drugs and sex are not appropriate tools for overcoming co-dependency or filling your inner emptiness. Instead, focus on enjoying the single life, as you develop a wide variety of interests and activities, meet people, and make new friends. With interests, activities and a good network of friends and acquaintances, the inner emptiness and the painful longing will cease. If you feel at home and in peace with yourself, chances are much higher that you will draw a partner to yourself with whom you can create and enjoy a mutually supportive and fulfilling relationship. If you feel you need support to move beyond co-dependency, I offer a free course on how to create healthy relationships or distance courses on Selfgrowth, love and relationships where I shift the energetic patterns that hold co-dependency in place. Nine Must-Do Positioning Steps

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By Henry DeVries Every professional or consultant knows that clients typically hire people they know, like and trust. But how do you build trust with strangers? As Ralph Waldo Emerson’s 150-year-old essay titled “Compensation” teaches, first you must give if you want to receive. The best positioning strategy for professional service firms is to build trust by giving away valuable information. That’s why professional service firm marketing works best when it demonstrates expertise by educating prospects, not asserting superiority through flashy brochures and Web sites. Based on best practices research, here are 10 must-do positioning steps every professional service firm and technology service should take. 1. Identify the target market. Find a potential market niche that will be profitable. In today’s market, clients demand specialists. You want fewer prospects to be interested in you, but you want them to be much more intensely interested. This requires focus. It doesn’t mean you’ll turn down a client who doesn’t fit into your two or three chosen verticals — it simply means you won’t be actively shaping your marketing message toward them. Evaluate your business. Have you sold most of your products to golf-ball manufacturers, pet stores and electrical suppliers? Then those are the three places to start thinking. But if pet stores in general don’t have the budget for your products, you’ll need to look harder. 2. Make a promise. Determine what promise you or your firm is making to your target market. This includes your unique selling proposition: what you do, who you do it for and how you are unlike competitors — all in 25 words or less. Are you willing to make a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee a part of that promise? You need to decide what makes you different from everybody else, and you need to overcome fear of focus — the desire to want to be everything to everybody. People hire professionals who specialize. Very few people would hire a surgeon who says he can do everything from tonsillectomies to facelifts and open-heart procedures. When you’re in pain, you want a specialist — not just somebody who’s “good with a knife.” 3. Check your reflection. Take a fresh look at your logo, letterhead, business cards, office space, wardrobe — anything tangible that a prospect could use as a basis for an early opinion about you. Design changes every few years. Take a hard look. Do your printed materials look like they’re stuck in the disco era? This is where it pays to overspend. There are five attributes that clients use to judge professionals, and appealing tangibles heads the list. 4. Create an educational Web site. Create an easy-to-update, database-driven Web site that demonstrates your competence, rather than asserts how great you are. The Web site is the cornerstone of new marketing, and must not be a mere electronic brochure. Your Web site is the silent salesperson that prospective clients visit before making the decision to grant you permission to meet. We have information available on the most common blunders in Web design, and we share that with clients. 5. Determine proprietary process. Create a proprietary problem-solving process that you name and protect by obtaining a trademark. Your process must have a mysterious name that requires explanation. A proprietary process is not only a marketing asset that will allow you to charge more, but also will make your work less accidental and improve the quality of your service. 6. Conduct proprietary research. Conduct research that you own. Begin by choosing the three biggest problems your target clients face that your service can solve. What clients want to know most is how they stack up to their competition. Your specific answers will command client and media attention. 7. Create white papers or how-to articles. Write articles on how clients can solve their biggest problems. In essence, you are giving your insights away for free. These are used on the Web site and in the lead generation efforts. You need to give away information on how to solve problems in general so clients will trust you enough to hire you to solve their specific problems. 8. Create an image folder. Create an image folder that will not go out of date for a minimum of five years. The folder needs to be appealing and should contain as few words as possible. There are several techniques to ensure the folder has a long and useful shelf life, like not printing photos of people (fashions change) and phone numbers (so do area codes). Next, create the adaptable contents for the folder. You may choose up to three target markets, and need materials to adapt to each one. This allows you to project an image of a specialist with a specific process for each target client base. 9. Create a PDF of tips brochure. Avoid printing a brochure if at all possible; instead create an electronic version that can be read by anyone with an e-mail address and free Adobe Acrobat software. You can post the brochure on your Web site, e-mail it to clients and even use your own laser printer to create print-on-demand versions for Internet-averse potential clients. As to the content, think guidebooks with tips rather than the traditional puff pieces. Henry DeVries is a marketing coach and writer specializing in lead generation for professional service firms. Green Tea And Weight Loss - Can Green Tea Boost Health And Help You Lose Weight?

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Ian Robertson Theres an old Chinese adage that goes something like this, Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one. Although this is obviously not reliable nutritional information, it still goes to show how integral the tea plant was and still is to the Asian diet. But can tea, and green tea especially, help someone lose weight? Well, according to a 1999 study conducted at the University of Switzerland in Geneva, yes it can. Researchers discovered that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burnt more calories than the opposing group that was only given caffeine or a placebo. So technically, green does aid in weight loss. But thats not all that green tea is capable of. Green teas medicinal properties stem largely from a certain polyphenol or antioxidant, called epigallocatechin gallate. Its a mouthful, but this substance is a true workhorse that inhibits the growth of cancer cells as well as lowers ones LDL/VLDL cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels among a host of other things. And according to one Japanese study, those who drank 10 cups or more of green tea showed signs of better liver function. Another Japanese study also demonstrated that the incidence of cerebral hemorrhage and stroke was at least twice as high in those that drank fewer than 5 cups of green tea a day as compared to those that drank greater than or equal to 5 cups of green tea a day. Aside from drastically lowering incidence of stroke and blood cholesterol levels, increased green tea consumption can also work wonders elsewhere. In a study conducted for the Iowa Womens Health Study, researchers studied the tea drinking habits of over 35,000 postmenopausal women and found that those who drank more than two cups of tea a day were 32% less likely to have cancers of the stomach, esophagus, mouth, colon, and rectum. Furthermore, these same women were also 60% less likely to develop urinary tract cancer. Lately green tea has also been analyzed for its ability to protect the body against the carcinogenic changes caused by cigarette smoke. But, this doesnt give you a license to smoke like a chimney. So put away the lighter. Now, although some Chinese teas come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, none are as potent as green tea. The reason is that green tea is processed differently than oolong or black tea. The tea leaves are steamed, so that the epigallocatechin gallate remains intact, whereas in black and oolong tea, the leaves are fermented. To some, green tea may serve only as a refreshing beverage, but to others, its medicinal properties serve a role similar to that of a multivitamin, as a sort of added life-insurance. These health benefits mentioned in this article are only the tip of the iceberg. So, go ahead, quit stalling, and start brewing a pot. Your body needs a breather. How To Exponentially Increase Your Brand Awareness Part II

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Daniel Toh Previously in Part I of How To Exponentially Increase Your Brand Awareness, we have witnessed that by identifying the building blocks of your business brand, knowing what your customers want by asking them directly, you will have a firm grasp of the basics to increasing your brand awareness. So lets get on with Part II! Step 4: Get Inside The Head of Your Ideal Customer Another good way to gather what your ideal customers want would be to get into the heads of your customers, and by experiencing the world that they live in.You could start by thinking about the lifestyle of your ideal customer, what are their likings, their hobbies, passion, habits, preferences and also what they dislike and hate. Better yet, you could create a personality profile of your ideal customer and write down all the likely details about them. Picture them as a whole person that you could be of service to, instead of an object or entity that you could take advantage of. Using this perspective, you would be able to reach your customers from the heart and gain even more backend profits, rather than dissatisfied one-off customers that wouldnt patronize your company again. Step 5: Empathize with the Feelings of your Customer Now its time to get emotional. Have you ever seen someone shouting for joy over their new Ipod? Or feeling over the top after test driving a Ferrari or after purchasing their new BMW? Human are and always will be emotional beings. The route to their continued loyalty and repeat customer purchase is through their heart. If you give them what they really want, or what they really needed they will remember you. Added on to that, if you kept all your promises and underpromise but overdeliver and give excellent customer service, they will be your raving fans. So what drives people emotionally? I can offer you some of the common factors that stimulates customers emotions. Growth: Does your product or service help others grow? Common example would be that by going to University, students will learn more about their specialty, to grow and become useful to the society. Contribution: Does your service or product help them contribute to their family, friends and the society? Like World Vision where you can donate a cow to a starving family in Africa, where they can use the cow as a food source. Significance: Does it bring significance? Products such as the Ipod Nano gave some people a measure over their friends, due to its style and sense of coolness Variety: Does it give options and variety? Baskin 31 Robbins became famous due to their variety of 31 flavors of ice-cream, but since has expanded to over 1000 flavors. Certainty: Does your product give customers a sense of certainty? By going to McDonalds youre nearly certain that youd get your foods fast. In like 3 minutes. Connection and Love: Does it give connection and love? Alright, thats a hard outcome to produce, so go search for it! Freedom: Does it promise you some kind of freedom? The lure of network marketing and their promises of giving you passive income, so that you will eventually gain financial freedom.By keeping in mind the needs and wants of your customers and engineering them into your product, you will definitely have a significant advantage in increasing your brand awareness, as you would touch them in their hearts and emotions first before anything else. Step 6: Create Focus Groups Focus groups are exactly what it means, to focus even deeper into the issues of customer satisfaction and customer wants. It should include customers from your targeted market and your ideal customers, and they should be rewarded generously after participating in the intensive focus groups. Valuable feedback can be obtained by doing this, although it can be very time consuming, but the depth of information given can often be astounding. The next part will show you even more advance ways to exponentially increase your brand awareness. Using Chinese Herbs For Health

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Michelle Bery The history of Chinese herbs used for medicinal purposes dates back to sometime between 800 and 200 BC with the publication of Huang Di Nei Jing - The Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine. At this time, a combination of 28 separate Chinese herbs had been discovered to have great healing power and the combination of many of these are still in existence today. By around 500 AD, Chinese herbs had been sorted into a classification system that helped guide their use depending on the particular situation. Superior herbs were used to help sustain health much as we use herbal and vitamin supplements today; middle herbs were used to treat illness; and inferior herbs were used to cure disease. Chinese herbs have been credited with successfully treating everything from acne to infertility. In todays world, where traditional medicine tends to focus on the methods employed in Western medicine, much of the uses of Chinese herbs are largely passed over. But for those who look towards non-traditional medicine as a means of recovering health or even as a supplement to traditional medical care, they will find the benefits of Chinese herbs to be rooted in ancient knowledge and a history of success. Chinese herbs can be found in a variety of places including medical offices following the Eastern practice of medicine, Asian markets, and even online. But the use of Chinese herbs, while most often safe, should be used under the guidance of a medical professional and after extensive research has been performed. If there is an interest in using Chinese herbs to help supplement health or treat an existing condition, it is best to research those herbs that have shown success in these particular instances. Seek out a medical professional or someone well-versed in the use of Chinese herbs to determine the best way to proceed. When Chinese herbs are used in conjunction with education, preparedness, and medical supervision, they can be a fantastic tool to achieving overall, natural health. Pest Control - Invasive Species

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By Stephanie McIntyre As if homeowners, farmers and gardeners don’t have enough to deal with from native born pest species. There are a host of invasive pests that have chosen to make their homes in countries where natural controls don’t exist. These bad bugs can truly devastate entire native populations of plants, trees, animals and other insects, and leave destruction in their wake. In a world where every place is readily accessible by every other place, controlling the transference of alien insects is becoming increasingly difficult. And one of these species can be well established before anyone is aware of their presence, or how they got there. They represent a real challenge for all of us in the future. Here is a list of some of them along with their descriptions. Asian tiger mosquito - gets it name from the black and white stripes that cover its body and legs. This mosquito was originally found in Houston, TX, in 1985 in a shipment of used tires. It has subsequently invaded many other southern states and has made it’s way as far north as New Jersey. It tends to be more aggressive than most native mosquitoes, and it feeds during the day rather than night. Like other types, the female is the one who bites humans, and these particular mosquitoes are more successful than most at it. Because it bites so quickly, it is able to elude most attempts to swat it. Also, they will lay their eggs near any open container of water but unlike other species, not directly in water. They are becoming an increasingly problematic pest for humans who live within their range. Asian longhorned beetle - has become one of the most serious threats to American hardwood trees. They have been known to most often attack chestnuts, maples, elms, willows and poplars, and can kill even healthy trees. They are woodborers, feeding on both the sapwood and the heartwood of the trees that they attack. The Asian longhorned beetle is about an inch long, black with white markings, and has 2 very long antennae on its head. The antennae are longer than the bug’s body. These large, bullet-shaped insects also have elongated feet and the top surface is a bluish color. They have no natural enemies in the U.S., and therefore have the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage to the nation’s hardwood lumber industry, and other related industries. Female beetles chew through a tree’s bark and lay their eggs underneath. When the immature beetles hatch, they will chew farther into the tree to feed on living tissue. This interrupts the trees food supply, which ultimately starves it to death. Upon reaching maturity, the adults chew their way back out to start the cycle again. Currently the only control for these beetles is to cut down and destroy all infested trees. Mexican bean beetles - are one of the few destructive members of the lady beetle family. Both adults and immature beetles are injurious to the plants they feed on. The eggs of this beetle are oval shaped and yellow, while the larva are spiny, bright yellow and about 1/3 inch long. The adults are inches long, yellow to copper colored, with 16 black spots on the wings. The larvae and adults feed on the undersides of leaves of soybeans, snap beans, limas, kidney beans and a host of other garden plants. They chew leaves between the spines leaving a skeletonized, lace-like structure behind. These leaves eventually shrivel up, turn brown and die. Adults will also feed on seedlings as they emerge in the early part of the growing season. Since infestations are heaviest in the latter parts of summer, some control is possible by planting crops early. Also, when possible, handpicking can significantly reduce their numbers. These are just a few of the invasive pests inadvertently introduced into the U.S. There are many others that threaten our habitat, wildlife and industries. Vigilance on the part of all of us is key if we are to keep these invaders from destroying that which we hold valuable. Stephanie McIntyre and Wendell Bryant are Internet developers.
